The Jack’s Surfboards website does not make it easy to find in-stock items in specific sizes. I was surprised that this 3mm (not 3/2) was available in my odd size, XLS, which in their version happens to fit my body like a custom suit (I have a nice 3 mm custom). Sizing varies among brands. Buell’s XLS is a bit plumper than some. It fits my 5’8 height, as well as my 200 lb weight. The label claims a key pocket on the outside left calf. There isn’t a key pocket or loop. Rubbery taping-like material looks good and feels soft, without the circular reinforcements at joints that some have, except in the neck area where thin rubber has super-thin fabric covering and round reinforcements. Lining fabric is about the same thickness throughout the suit, slick, like the exterior, on lower leg, arms, and sides of body. Fuzzy but thin material is used for chest, back, shoulder, neck areas. The chest zipper entry seems well designed. I had no problems getting the suit on or offf, unlike today’s 2mm full suit from a respected San Diego brand, which was put on easily, but seemed very sticky and reluctant to move, taking the suit off. The Buell slipped off just fine. First trial was a dawn swim, 60º air and warm 75º water. It was of course a bit too warm, but served very well for the hour. Two-day USPS shipping to Florida was lightning fast.
I ordered two suits last winter trying to find a good 4/3 under $300. I first ordered a Needsessential suit with the glued outer seams but it was on back order. I was getting cold so I ordered the Dr1 4mm and got it right away. It’s one of the best fitting wetsuits I’ve owned. It kept me warm in 56-60 degree water. Meanwhile I finally got the Needsessential. It actually kept me a little warmer but didn’t fit as well. It felt restrictive and rode up on my ankles and wrists. I’m 6’2, 180lbs, and I ordered the LT in both suits. The Buell was longer in the arms and legs. I surf daily and found myself grabbing the Buell most days. I usually buy a new suit every year and of the two brands I would go with Buell. I just hope the price stays reasonable.
it's a decent wetsuit. 3mm wetsuit is ok but not super warm for SoCal for mid 60 degrees Farenheit. The one thing that i really was surprised was that there is no key pocket or key holder on the wetsuit. For the price, I was very surprised as it's basically standard these days in my view. If I knew it didn't have the key holder, then I would probably not have bought this for the price...
The thicknes of the wetsuit is used having 2 numbers separated by a slash. The first numer represents the thickness of the material covering the torso & the second number represents the thickness over the arms, legs & shoulders.
For colder temperatures we recommend a thicker material. A 3/2 or a 2/1 will suffice for warmer water temperatures.
