Is a longboard surfboard good for beginners?

Yes. A longboard's length and volume make it the easiest hard board to paddle, catch waves on and stand up on. Look for a forgiving, wide shape like NSP's Sleep Walker, which NSP built to work for everyone from the best longboarders to people just starting out, or Torq's TET, made to glide in small surf. What kind of longboard do you want?

• Noseriders and logs: heavy, stable and made for walking to the nose. Donald Takayama's In the Pink is the most sought-after model in his range, according to Takayama. Wayne Rich's Wildcard 3 keeps the wide nose and crescent tail that helped him win three straight Malibu Surfing Association club contests, and NSP's Sleep Walker is a single-fin log built for long hang tens.
• Performance longboards: lighter, with more rocker for turning. Torq's ACT Don HP is the high-performance model in its Don series, and Walden's Magic has hard rails and a double concave for speed.
• Big-guy longboards: Walden says its Mega Magic floats like a board 12 to 18 inches longer. Aipa's Big Brother Sting is another high-volume pick, with 91 liters in the 9'0 and 111 in the 10'0.

Single fin or 2+1?

A single fin in a long box gives the smooth, drawn-out turns and trim that classic logs are known for. A 2+1 setup adds two small side fins for more grip and control when you turn. Many longboards let you pick: Torq's TET runs 2+1 in the 8'6 and 9'0, and NSP's Sleep Walker is set up as a single fin. Check each listing for fin box type and whether fins are included.

How do surfboard shipping, pickup and returns work?

Surfboards aren't part of our free shipping offer. They ship within the US at a flat rate that starts at $150, and for Hawaii you'll need to contact us. We don't cover return shipping on surfboards, and a returned surfboard is subject to a $50 restocking fee. To skip shipping, buy online and pick up at one of our six Southern California shops in Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Dana Point, Hermosa Beach and Santa Monica.

What is the best longboard for a beginner?

Can a beginner ride a 7 foot surfboard?

Yes, if it has enough volume. A wide 7' mid-length or soft top can work well for a lighter beginner. Heavier beginners usually do better on 8' and up, since more volume makes paddling and catching waves easier.

What size surfboard for a 300 lb man?

Is 30 too old to longboard?
