Surfboard Volume
Find Ideal Volume
Volume should be a guide, not a rule, and this chart can help you figure out a good ballpark volume for you to base your boards off of.
Ability/weight/volume numbers are not exact science, but will give you an idea of where to start. This chart is assuming that we are talking about a basic performance board to be ridden in average/good waves.
- Generally speaking you would want to ADD volume for a board designed for smaller, weaker conditions
- You would ADD volume for a step-up board for use in bigger, more powerful waves
- Wearing a lot of rubber (thick wetsuit, booties, etc.) adds to your weight and diminishes paddle power, so ADDING a little additional foam will help you.
- You want to balance the added ease of paddling (more volume) with sensitivity and performance (less volume)

Pairs well with
JS Industries Bull Run Hyfi 3.0 Surfboard
GLIDE UP FRONT, DRIVE IN THE BACK.
The Bull Run is a step-down fun board that’s incredibly user friendly but still performance oriented, designed to be your go-to surfboard up to head high.
An alternative design to the rest of the boards in our range – the Bull Run is built for surfers who want a generous outline with a full nose, providing more stability, easier paddling and extra momentum down the line. These design features give it the advantages of a mid-length, yet in a more compact, manoeuvrable board.
While less extreme than our dedicated super grovellers, you’ll still be able to get plenty of volume hidden in a much shorter board than a Raging Bull. A low rocker complements its ability to generate and hold speed, with just enough curve to fit in tight pockets and hit sections hard.
Compared to the Raging Bull, it has a similar pulled in round tail to maintain drive and provide control. The main differences are its flatter rocker, deeper single to double concave for extra lift in weak conditions, and that wider nose area that Occ and JS loved so much throughout R&D.
The Bull Run balances forgiveness and performance, helping to unlock your best surfing across a range of conditions, fitness and ability levels.WAVE TYPE
Bull Run is designed primarily for flatter faced waves, with the full nose, flatter rocker and deeper concaves to easily gather speed and keep momentum in those weaker conditions. However due to to more pulled in round tail, you’ll still have drive in more powerful sections and some surfers will use this as an all-rounder in most waves up to around head high.
Rocker
The Bull Run has an overall low to flat rocker. This is the perfect all-round rocker for creating speed and glide in small to fun conditions.
Fin setup
Comes stock as a five fin and will work equally well as a quad or thruster depending on the conditions and how you want to surf. We recommend the JS Hydroglass Signature or Upright Template paired with our JS Hydroglass Quad Trailers for speed in a variety of wave conditions. Alternative setups are available with custom orders.
Glassing specs
Boards 5'6" - 5'8" are glassed standard with 4 oz. deck x 4 oz. bottom. Boards 5'9" and above are glassed standard with 4 x 3 oz. deck and 4 oz. bottom. (All sizes come standard with Hybrid Fibre tail strips)
Rail type
The Bull Run has a medium to low rail, with a flatter deck, maintaining volume throughout whilst not sacrificing manoeuvrability.
