Rip Curl's history in wetsuits
Doug Warbrick and Brian Singer started Rip Curl in 1969 in Torquay, Victoria, near Bells Beach, making surfboards. A year later they started making wetsuits, adapting diving suits for surfing, and wetsuits have been at the heart of the brand ever since. Rip Curl became one of surfing's "big three" alongside Quiksilver and Billabong.
Rip Curl wetsuit sizing
Rip Curl suits should fit snug, with no sagging at the lower back or armpits. Rip Curl makes separate women's suits, like the women's Dawn Patrol, Omega and Flashbomb. Check our men's and women's Rip Curl size guides, and see the kids size guide for groms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Rip Curl wetsuits any good?
Yes. Rip Curl has been making wetsuits since 1970 and builds suits at every level, from the affordable Omega to the Flashbomb Fusion. The Dawn Patrol is the everyday favorite, and the Flashbomb is the one to get if you want Rip Curl's warmest, stretchiest suit.
What happened with Rip Curl?
In 2019, Rip Curl was sold to Kathmandu, an outdoor company. The brand still designs and sells its wetsuits, boardshorts and surfwear, and it's still one of the biggest names in surfing.
What is the difference between a Rip Curl E-Bomb and a Flashbomb?
Both are high-end suits with E7 and E6 linings. The Flashbomb uses Rip Curl's flash linings and Fusion dry seams for maximum warmth. The E-Bomb uses thermo linings and internally taped seams, and it costs less than the Flashbomb.
What are the differences between the Rip Curl Dawn Patrol and Flashbomb?
The Dawn Patrol is Rip Curl's everyday suit, with E5 neoprene and stress point taping, and it's the value pick of the range. The Flashbomb steps up to E7 and E6 flash linings and Fusion dry seams for more warmth and stretch, and it sits at the top of the range.
Should I get a 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit?
A 3/2 is the go-to when the water is mild, and a 4/3 is the usual pick for winter in Southern California. If you only buy one suit and you surf year round, a 4/3 covers more days. Our wetsuit guide has the full water temperature chart.
Does Rip Curl make kids wetsuits?
Yes. We carry the kids Dawn Patrol in back zip and chest zip, the kids Omega, and the boys Flashbomb Pro for groms who surf year round. See all our kids wetsuits for more.
How do Rip Curl wetsuits fit?
Snug, like a second skin. Rip Curl makes separate men's, women's and kids suits, so pick the one made for you and use our Rip Curl size guides for height, weight and chest.
Are Rip Curl wetsuits ever on sale?
Sometimes. Past-season Rip Curl suits show up in our wetsuit sale, so it's worth a look before you buy.
